Suggestions for Website Designers

Design

  • Responsive design sounds like another one of those nonsense marketing terms, sort of like calling every new useless social media app “revolutionary.” But responsive design is also a good thing for everyone. For users: No more mobile sites that don’t have the same content or layout as the desktop site. The page is less cluttered because responsive design forces the designer to make pages that can scale down to mobile devices. For developers: you don’t have to write a second site for small screens. For marketing officers: you get a cool sounding word to pitch your “web experience” with, though you lose the ability to say stuff like “the mobile web,” which never really existed, by the way.
  • Less is usually better, though make sure the different areas of your site are defined.
  • On that subject, remove links to external fonts, icons, etc if you can. I am going to do this as soon as I dig into building my theme.

Publishing

  • Review what you are going to publish before publishing it. Or save it for a bit and come back later when your mind is fresh.
  • Be concerned about the quality of your work, but not too much. Don’t be like Franz Kafka, who was so self-depricating that he never felt confident enought to have his works published. Then again, don’t be like his supposed friend, Max Brod, who betrayed Kafka’s last wish to have his works destroyed by publishing everything.
  • Write to the level of your audience. Not too dumbed down, but not to sofisticated and lofty.
  • Be concise, but don’t be afraid to expand on topics that need clarification. Make your writing convey the topic as clear as you understand it yourself.
  • And if you don’t understand the topic, don’t go writing guides about it. Share what you’ve learned and what you understand, but don’t try to fake understanding everything.
