Maintenance Routine

(last updated

Running a web server is a big responsibility, and while this site has just my personal stuff, I take its care very seriously. I do a quick health check of my server every day, much like others check their email each morning. For those who are interested, here are the things I do each day on my server. The list might look long, but each of these things is really quick to check off.

Daily Server Tasks

On my local computer:

check for admin VM updates
check the mail

In my Linode Dashboard:

check for kernel updates
check my server’s status and network usage
check Linode system graphs

On my server’s SSH console:

check for server updates and available disk usage

In my WordPress dashboard:

check for WordPress updates
look at post calendar and see what needs to be written
update my Status Widget

At code.aidanmontare.net:

check for activity on my issue trackers
remove any spam comments

On my tablet:

read my RSS feeds

Weekly Server Tasks

Additionally, there are some other tasks that I only do once every week, typically on Sunday:

On my server’s SSH console:

make a local backup of aidanmontare.net and code.aidanmontare.net
scan server logs for suspicious things

In Google Webmaster Tools:

check for any alerts

In a web browser:

run a malware scan with Sucuri SiteCheck
run an SSL Labs Server Test

On my WordPress Dashboard:

update one page
add a blog post
