In general, I try to stay as far away from the news as possible and enjoy what I am doing in my own life. But since I started this website, I figured it would be good to know what’s going on in the web development world. Then I remembered these things called RSS feeds (try mine). There are independent feed readers, and I tried using Thunderbird, but since feeds are web pages anyway, I decided to use Firefox’s Live Bookmarks feature. By default, Firefox doesn’t present you with any overview of all your subscribed feeds, so check out Feed Sidebar, a simple extension that does just that. (Note that double clicking an item will actually open it, single clicking only gives a preview, and but for some reason still marks the item as read.)
Now I have an easy way to see all the feeds I subscribe to. But what feeds are important to a WordPress administrator? For now, I am following the feeds of all the blogs on WordPress Planet, as well several of the WordPress development blogs, and a few others.
I’m hoping that following some key blogs in the WordPress community will help me learn more about WordPress and stay up to date on things that might affect my site. The list of things I follow will likely change as I judge what I need to know. Maybe in a month or two I will share a list of the blogs I am following for others to use.
As a side note, you may have noticed that my site theme changed slightly. I am slowly working on developing it based on the TwentyFourteen theme. Most recently, I centered the site’s content and set up different sidebars for my blog and other pages. The next step will probably be redoing the CSS to use Foundation, and then implementing GRC‘s scriptless menu system. Yes, the CSS that in the theme now works fine, but I think using Foundation will make designing pages easier, and give me a site that will always have the best responsive design practices, even after TwentyFifteen officially comes out.
That’s pretty much it for TWIA. I’ve been pretty busy with personal stuff, but I hope to devote my spare time to web development, and then hopefully start documenting my website’s build process to help others do the same.
