Categories and Tags

I already wrote that one of the hardest things about making this site was deciding what should be a post or a page. Another issue was deciding the difference between categories and tags.

Originally, I thought I wouldn’t use categories, as having both categories and tags seemed confusing when they both seemed to do nearly the same thing. However, as I started adding content to my blog, I started making a schedule of when I would post things each week. For now, Sunday is the day I post my thoughts for the week, while Wednesday is the day I post some little tidbit, usually a link.

I was going to tag all these tidbits Inspirations, but then I realized that this tag would quickly become much larger than all the other tags. So I have decided to change my organization, and now Inspirations is a category. Why? Its seems to me that categories are for the types of things you post, like short links or long rants, while tags are for the subjects on which you are writing, such as computers or radio.

This is how I have implemented it on my blog. So now Inspirations is a category of stuff on my blog, as well as SundayThoughts (a post commenting on a topic of interest, like this one), and others. Each of these posts are tagged with the topics that they cover. So this post is tagged with ThisSite, because it relates to this website, as well as Blogging, because it is a post about blogging.

As a side note, I came up with a cool acronym: This Week In Aidan, or TWIA. So when I don’t have any thoughts worth sharing for the week, I might write about the things I have been doing, and put it in the TWIA category. (Unfortunately, TWIA also stands for This Week in America, a podcast, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, and some other things. But none of them really relate to what I am writing about, so hopefully they won’t mind!)
