On the Theory of Blogging

One of the issues I had in creating this site is what should go in a page or a post.

For instance, my guide on configuring a DAViCal Calendar Server is a simple page that someone might put in a blog entry. But being in a blog post means that viewers would have a hard time finding it on my site once it was no longer at the top of my blog page. And if I wrote an update on the subject, how would they find the new post? Courteous bloggers update their posts with links to more recent articles, but if I write a lot about a certain subject, it would be hard to remember to update all the related posts.

To me, things that make good blog posts should become less relevant as time goes on. For instance, my introduction to this site, Welcome to Aidan Montare Dot Net, is not going to be as useful once my site (hopefully) becomes more well known. Or if I wrote about politics, those articles would belong in blog posts because few people want to read about last year’s news.

It seems like the things I want to share here are mostly references that will stay relevant for a long time (or so I hope). I plan on updating with different versions, and I want people to always find the most recent version. So it makes more sense to see them in pages.

But WordPress is a blog engine, and so I decided I might as well have a blog.

What Am I Going to Write About?

Beats me! Probably anything that meets the criteria above for a blog post. Most of my work right now is in updating the pages of this site, and in a few weeks it will be redesigning this site’s theme. All of that will be in pages. But I will try to find things to write about on this blog. Some things may be about technology, either news or things I notice. Others will be about music, life, or anything else.

My Schedule

I decided that I will try to write one blog entry every Sunday. I’ll try it out and see how it goes. If nothing else, it will at least be a good way to get writing practice.

I also want to share various things that I find around the internet that I like or find useful, and I will try to share on of those every Wednesday, with the tag inspiration. Not all of them may be necessarily inspiring, but I plan on building a custom page that will collate all of these tidbits into a pleasing display.
